Using AOL With QIS.net
Whether you are a new or experienced AOL user it is possible to
access AOL with your QIS account. This is helpful if you live in
the outlying areas of Maryland that aren't covered by AOL's access
numbers. Additionally, AOL access charges are reduced to $14.95/mo. if you
access their service without using their dial-up modem pool.
Obtaining Software and Initial Installation
(If you don't have AOL on your computer now)
- Obtain software for AOL either by CD, or by downloading it from
the AOL website (www.aol.com).
- During installation you will be prompted with modem search messages
and/or local access number messages. Skip or ignore these since AOL will
not be dialing or controlling your modem.
- When AOL first loads, you will be asked two more questions regarding
your phone number and your initial login and password. You will need to
just bypass these by answering yes or cancel to them.
Setting up AOL for Internet Users
- When you are presented with the AOL Setup and Sign On screen, you will
need to select "SETUP".
- Now, you need to select "EDIT LOCATION" to envoke the Network Setup
Window.
- Ignore the phone number fields, and skip down to the modem speed and
network fields.
- In both modem speed fields, you need to select "57600".
- In the Network Fields, you need to select "TCP/IP".
- Ignore the last two check boxes, and click "Save".
- Click "OK".
Logging into AOL through QIS
- Minimize AOL and log into QIS as normal.
- Once you are logged into QIS, maximize AOL and click on "SIGN
ON".
America Online will now use Quantum Internet Services to connect to
your account. Quantum Internet
Services is in no way affiliated with America Online, Inc. Access to AOL
via the Internet is part of AOL's "Bring-your-own-access $14.95" plan. Any
problems with AOL and its services should be directed to their Technical
Support department.
