Adding A Counter To Your Webpage

If you would like to know how many individuals have viewed the webpage you have spent so many hours creating, just take a few minutes to install the counter script that was developed for that purpose. This counter script is available to all users who have hard disk space on our server. The steps to add the counter to your webpage are as follows:

  • The page that displays the counter must have it's own data file in order to keep track of the number of hits. The datafile must be called username.dat (where username is your username).
  • Be sure that you are connected via a TELNET session. The following command can not be typed in a FTP session.
  • To create a data file for use on your webpage, simply type "makecounter" while in your home directory in our server. This will create the data file for you.

    Now you will then need to edit your .html file for your webpage as follows:

  • Load your web page file into a text editor such as pico or vi.
  • Select a location for your counter, usually at the end of the page.
  • To call the counter, add the image tag below to your document:

username.dat - name of your datafile as described in step#1 above.

option1...option2 - various options to control the look and feel of the counter. There can be an unlimited number of options used.

Some of the options are:

display=x

Sets what to display. x can equal clock, counter, or date.
EXAMPLE: display=date

ft=x

Sets thickness for the frame around the numbers. Use 0 for no frame.
EXAMPLE: ft=3

dd=x

Sets the digit style. There are currently four available: A, B, C, and D
EXAMPLE: dd=B

For other options, like the ones in the table above, or for more instructions, contact Muhammad Muquit at his web page for much more information.
