Adam and Eden after Lilith
Adam went to Yaweh after Lilith's flight and complained that he had no-one to bring him figs, the garden was messy and the sheep kept running away. When his angels couldn't coerce Lilith to return, Yaweh became tired of Adam's constant whining and made Steve as a submissive housekeeper and bottom for Adam. After endless complaints about his appearance, Steve went on a course of hormone therapy, had a sex change and took the name Eve.

Life among the watermelons
The watermelonization of Judy Gregory started 10 years ago when she headed for JoAnn's Fabric & Crafts in Loch Raven Plaza with the idea of redecorating her screened side porch.
"I don't care for flowers or lace or froufrou stuff," she says. "They showed me this lovely watermelon pattern ..."
She covered the glider cushions, she found a different watermelon print for a table, found a watermelon ice bucket and drinking glasses and she was off and running. First the porch, then the kitchen - among other things, she stenciled a watermelon vine on the walls and hung wooden watermelon plaques on it, then the dining room, then the living room.

Voice in the street vs. voice in the pulpit
Ex-member's protests lead Balto. Co. church to sue

The judge's order was supposed to create a Christmastime truce in the rancorous protests outside the large New Antioch Baptist Church in Randallstown.
Baltimore County Circuit Judge Lawrence R. Daniels figured that if he prohibited the bullhorns that have irked neighbors since May, and if he forced James E. Roberts Sr., excommunicated by New Antioch, and his fellow protesters to stay across Old Court Road from the church, then maybe this holiday season would be tranquil.
But there was no peace on Old Court Road last weekend.
Protesters were there, just as they have been every Sunday since May, their growing, if still small, numbers criticizing the Rev. Kenneth L. Barney and what they say is the church's focus on construction projects and wealth at the expense of charity and social action.
To officials at New Antioch Baptist, which has 5,000 members, the continued protests showed that more legal action is needed to maintain tranquillity for parishioners and to put to rest a nearly yearlong headache....
Bernetha George, a Baltimore County physician, said she saw Roberts and his group as she was driving by the church one Sunday in June, and decided to join the protest.
She said she was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore until the late 1990s, when she left because of a "general dissatisfaction with how the church deals with the needs of the black community."

HHS inspector general does favors for big business, President's brother (from SunSpot.net)
Responding to a plea from a friend who represented two medical societies, the Health and Human Services inspector general intervened in an attempt to settle the groups' legal fight with Medicare regulators - even though her office wasn't involved in the case, interviews show.
Inspector General Janet Rehnquist, whose conduct in several matters is being investigated by Congress, ordered her legal staff to try and settle the dispute, current and former inspector general officials said.
The intervention is the latest dispute involving Rehnquist. Congressional investigators are looking into dismissals and transfers of senior staff members, her possession of a government handgun in her office and her approval of Florida's request to delay an audit of the state pension fund.
In the latter case, the delays ensured that the audit would not be completed before President Bush's brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, won re-election last month.

"The spirit of giving isn't nowhere near as much as the spirit of receiving," says Mervin Whipple (from SunSpot.net)
For 35 years, Mervin Whipple has personally greeted - and counted - about 1.4 million visitors from all over the country to his renowned annual Christmas Wonderland - a free light display with 120,000 bulbs and moving figures.
But the man known as Mr. Christmas might finally be pulling the plug on the tradition. Whipple said that when he turns off the lights at 9 p.m. Wednesday, he won't be turning them back on.
It's not just his age, though he is 74. And it's not just the cost, though the season's bill ran $18,000 last year - $4,000 for the electricity alone.
No, Christmas Wonderland is closing because there's just not enough Christmas spirit.
"The whole attitude of people has changed in 35 years," Whipple said. "The spirit of giving isn't nowhere near as much as the spirit of receiving."

Bizarro World Headline: Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health Drugs member is anti-abortion and opposes use of birth-control pills
(from SunSpot.net)
Dr. W. David Hager, a University of Kentucky obstetrician-gynecologist, was among 11 physicians appointed Tuesday to the FDA's Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health Drugs.

Hager has questioned the safety of the abortion pill, RU-486, and acknowledges that he is anti-abortion....

Hager also has condemned the birth control pill, used by an estimated 10 million American women, saying it has provided a convenient way for young people to be sexually active outside of marriage.

Stolen name, sullied record, lingering harm
(from SunSpot.net)

Terrance Summers quit recently after 17 years as a Baltimore corrections officer, fed up with bureaucracy and eager to start a new career.

But his enthusiasm wilted when he could not get work because prospective employers found several drug felonies on his record.

The fact that he hadn't committed the crimes did not solve his problem.

Lairy is widely used in Australia to mean either `flashily dressed, showy' or `socially unacceptable'. Lairy is thought to have come into Australian English around the end of the nineteenth century from the British slang term leery, meaning `wide awake, knowing, sharp, streetwise'.
