. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A small mountain town nestled in the Georges Creek valley, it started as a company town housing the workmen who ran the iron smelting furnace which was fed by the local iron ore and coal deposits. Now many of the residents are retired, and the town is almost a suburb of Frostburg and La Vale. Occasionally visited by tourists, it was the town where Lefty Grove of baseball fame grew up, as well as the site where the world-wide modern iron/steel industry started. The local library houses a museum room of historical artifacts related to Lonaconing, including Lefty Grove's most valuable player award.

No labor saving machinery is used in bag construction; the materials, tools, and hand fabrication methods replicate as much as possible the designs and workmanship of the Medieval English guildsmen
