The Rich and the Roadrunners Story

The band Rich and the Roadrunners began with an ad in the back a local music publication called "Maryland Musician" back in
the summer of 1993. That publication is now called Music Monthly . There also was an ad in another local rock publication called Rox.
Anyway the band gathered in a building behind a house in Rosedale and started rehearsing. The band was originally called
"Jack and the Beanstalks" and the first gig was at the Key Yacht Club on October 16th, 1993.
The band lineup back then (as pictured below) was: Jack Bennett-bass, Mike Cumberland- keyboards, Jim "Powers" Ulich- vocals,
Rich Kelly-drums, Jim Gilbert-guitar, Rich Schwarz- guitar

Not long after that it was decided to change the bands name for two simple reasons 1) Possible confusion with the children's
story Jack and the Beanstalk 2) Believe it or not, there was already a local heavy metal band called Jack and the
Beanstalks.
The name Richie and the Roadrunners was was suggested by the late, great Vince Corolla who had a band for many years called
Krackerjax. We shortened it to Rich and the Roadrunners and we were off to the races.
Towards the end of 1993 Robin Sypniewski joined the band as a vocalist about the same time that Mike Cumberland left the band
and Rich S. and Jim divided up the keyboard duties.
In early 1995 the group started using a horn section on some jobs. The original horns were Mark Grier-trumpet, Rich
Winkler-sax and Harry Coccoros on trombone. The horn section was eventually taken over and run by trombonist Lou Silvia who stayed with the group until 2004.
Other horn players who played with the group included sax players Stan Rouse, Ray M, John DeMartino, Frank B. trumpet players John Miconi, Ron Vierra, Kerry Martin
Charlie Ferguson joined the band on keybaords and vocals in August 1995. Jack left the group in October of 1996 and Jimmy
Gilbert moved over to bass. Robin left the band in August of 1997 and was replaced by Tanya Chaney. Ray Drewry also joined
about the same time as vocalist/soundman. Ray was with the group until December of 1998 when Ed, Marie and Rusty Hinshaw from
the band Full Circle joined the Roadrunners. Jim Gilbert left in 2001 and was replaced by Larry Thompson who was later replaced by Joe
Arizaga. Rich Kelly was replaced by Jim Bullock in 2003 and Rich Schwarz finally took some time off in January of 2005.
By the summer of 2005 the Rich S, Charlie, Jim G. and Rich K. decided to reform the group with Heather Carroll on vocals.
